The film, Who is Dayani Cristal, documents the search for the unknown identity of a Central American migrant who tried to cross the border to the United States. The unknown migrant's body was found on August 3rd of 2010 in the Sonora Desert of Arizona. All the identification that the police had found was a tattoo of the name "Dayani Cristal" across the man's chest. The film then documents the travel of the unidentified man by having the very, very, very great and talented actor Gael Garcia Bernal portray the unidentified man on a depiction of his journey. The film also takes place in a coroner's office with investigators working on finding who this man really is. Ultimately, we learn that "Dayani Cristal" was a great person with a postive outlook from interviews with his family.
This film tackles the issue of immigration and immigration laws and much of the film can be applied to Unit 2 of human geography. In Unit 2 we see the net migration of thousands from Central America to the US. The film also brings up the pull and push factors that many migrants have to consider. The major pull factor being the possibility of better jobs and new oppurtunites, the major push factor being the unstability of the Mexican government and violence. Viewers also get to see how undocumented immigrants are exploited and how many of the people who die trying to obtain a better future are often ignored and never recognized. Overall, this film is a great way to learn about immigration and the truggles of choosing to take on the journey of crossing the border in hopes of a better future.

| The film Who is Dayani Cristal? focuses on a Central American immigrant who attempted to cross the border to access the United States. Gael Garcia Bernal, who portrays Dayani Cristal on his journey to the United States, conveys Cristal's desire to discover how the United States can benefit him and how optimistic he was on finding a new home in the U.S. Cristal's body was found in the Sonora Desert in Arizona on August 3rd, 2010, and because of this, investigators have gathered in an office to discuss how to find out who this man was.
In this movie the viewers find themes of immigration and its laws, which we studied in Unit 2. Central Americans have net migrated to the U.S. not only because of Mexico's push factors (the violence and the corrupt, unstable government) but also because of the opportunities one can find in America and the chance to be independent and live the American Dream, or its pull factors. Students studying Unit 2 should watch this movie to see the struggle that immigrants face as they try to come to America, some risking or even losing their lives to live a higher quality of life. Because of the hope that immigrants cling to, they go on the arduous journey so that they could find liberty.
