Empires fall, love survives. When Michael (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant medical student, meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between Michael and Ana's boyfriend Chris (Christian Bale), a famous American photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth. As the Ottoman Empire crumbles into war-torn chaos, their conflicting passions must be deferred while they join forces to get their people to safety and survive themselves.

The Promise, a movie where two lovers, Michael and Ana, bond over over their common heritage, even when troubles arise. However, Ana’s boyfriend, Chris, an American focused on revealing the truth, does not seek to it just yet.
The movie starts off the day before World War 1, where the Ottoman Turkish Empire was on the edge of collapsing. Due to this, Assyrians and Armenians minorities lay between the rivalry. On October 29, 1914, Turkey enters the war, resulting in an Armenian genocide. This relates to AP Hug because many Armenians were slaughtered, also known as a genocide. Armenians were forced to flee their land in hopes of not dying, making them refugees. “The Promise” relates to AP Hug because although two lovers were formed, they had to survive through a genocide of their own heritage, thus their ethnicity group becoming refugees.
Overall, I rate this move a 3/5.

In the movie, The Promise, it tells the dangerous love story of a medical student named Michael and a dance instructor named Ana. The two Armenians met in Constantinope during the time of the fall of the Ottoman Empire and World War I. At this point in time, the Turks begin to kill off Armenians. Along their journey to escape the Turks, they were accompanied by Chris, Ana's boyfriend, Emre, Michael's Turkish friend, and Yeva, one of Michael's cousins. In the film, Michael was sent to a labor camp after trying to save his uncle, and Chris was captured by Ottoman troops but was saved by Emre. In the end, Emre was executed for saving Chris and Ana had drown from being thrown overboard the French cruiser, the Guichen.
This two-hour movie relates to population geography because it talks about genocide and forced migration. Genocide is the systematic killing of a group of people belonging to a certain racial, political, or cultural group. This film shows an example of this with the Turks mass killing the Armenians. Another term introduced in this unit was forced migration. This occurs when people have to leave their homes because of a serious threat. As seen in this movie, the main characters attempt to save as many of their people as possible by fleeing the Turk-controlled areas. Lastly, this unit talks about refugees which define the Armenians in this movie. These are all the reasons why this film demonstrates population geography.
After seeing this movie, I would rate it a 7/10. This movie excellently displays the horrors of genocide and the seriousness of war. However, I wish they would''ve focused a little more time on the topic of genocide and war than their love story. There were really good actors, and the plot was adequete.
