On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor,
Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on
the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the
first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct
descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand
tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather
Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more
than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of
tradition to fulfill her destiny.

Summary:
In the movie, Whale Rider, it portrays the life of a young girl named Paikea living in a tribe. This movie is set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, meaning the tribe is slightly modified with new technology and new clothes from how it was hundreds of years ago. Even with its new additions, this tribe also keeps old traditions. Throughout this movie, Pai attempts to become chief of the tribe. However, she must overcome obstacles like the expectations of a tribal women. Her grandfather would always look down on Pai and underestimate her abilities; therefore, he would not let her become chief. At the climax, Pai's grandfather finally realizes her capabilities and let her receive the title of chief. In the resolution, Paikea becomes the first-ever female chief of that tribe, and her grandfather is proud of her.

Relation to the Unit:
This movie relates to what we've learned so far in AP Human Geography, for it deals with folk and popular culture. Folk culture defines as culture practiced by a very diminutive collection of people. For example, their traditions are unique to only their group of people. Furthermore, this movie demonstrates the effect of popular culture on folk culture. Popular culture is the polar of folk culture. Basically, it is culture practiced by a large group of people. Based on the surrounding environment and the characters' appearances, their appliances and clothes were of popular culture. They used new technology and clothes that many people use. Also, the changing role of women in culture is changing because of popular culture. With popular culture, it encourages women to be treated equal to men. Whale Rider illustrates the difference between the two types of culture and how they affect each other.

Rating:
In my opinion, I would rate this as a 7/10. This is for the reason that I didn't find the plot very interesting. Also, some characters didn't develop as much as I hoped. They didn't portray the conflicts and situations very throughly. All in all, it was a fantastic movie, but it just wasn't very detailed.
