This is a fascinating look at the globalization of popular culture through studying pinball. The documentary will appeal to anyone who is interested in video/computer games. Before there were video games, there were pinball machines.
The movie chronicles the rise and fall of the pinball machine as an icon of American popular culture. From its birth in the USA, pinball spread to Europe and became extremely popular. During a period of time in the 1960s, the pinball industry was more lucrative than the movie industry. Fortunes were made in pinball. While the industry no longer dominates popular culture, it is an interesting insight into popular culture.

This movie was actually really interesting, I am giving it a 8.6/10. This movie explains the evolution and chronological order of the infamous pinball machine. How it evolved from a game of luck and payout to a a game of skill and amusement. It was pretty cool to see pinball making more money than the movie industry and how globalized it was during the 1960's. The movie showed how pinball became so popular and globalized that it migrated to Europe where it became even more popular than it was in the states. The movie gives us insight on this old popular culture and how it affected people back in its influential era.

Special When Lit: A Pinball Documentary explains the rise and fall of the pinball machine within the United States, shows how and why pinball globalized, and, through several interviews with designers, collectors, fans, and championship players, explores the history of the machine.
This movie shows fundamental human geography concepts. The two concepts presented in the movie are globalization and popular culture. Globalization is shown through how pinball originated in the United States and diffused to Europe. The quality of popular culture to be constantly changing is displayed through the rise and fall of pinball. In the past, pinball was a popular game and was part of popular culture, but it is no longer part of pop culture. This shows that some aspects in popular culture at one time can no longer be part of pop culture in the future because culture is constantly changing.
I rate the movie a 5/5 because I thought it was worth the time I spent watching it and I learned new things. I found the idea that the pinball industry making more money than American movie industry in 1950s through 1970s to be fascinating. Also, I found out that pinball games in popular culture were sometimes a symbol of rebellion.

After watching this documentary, I personally found it pretty boring. But then again, the documentary is supposed to appeal to anyone who is particularly interested in video/computer games, and I'm not interested in those types of things. Additionally, I'm not a fan of watching documentaries in general either. Although, a few parts did catch my attention. I did discover that pinball was changed from a game of luck to a game of skill. This proves that people didn't play pinball only for entertainment, but also to win at something. Overall, I would give this documentary a 3/5.
This documentary relates to a chapter previously read in the human geography class: Folk and Popular Culture. Pinball deals with the concept of popular culture. In the documentary, a man said, "Pinball has been a big part of pop culture." Also, an idea that was given was that pinball was pushed into the "mainstream." Pinball globalized across Earth to different locations and especially appealed to many adults. Although, pinball is no longer a part of popular culture.
